Sam Sherrill has written a book and put up a new website about harvesting urban timber. Heartwood is an organization dedicated to protecting the ecological value of our National Forests that lie to the east of the Rocky Mountains.

In the East, National Forests provide some of the last best habitat for migratory songbirds and other forest dependent species surrounded by urban sprawl, farmland and biologically impoverished pulpwood plantations.

The Dogwood Alliance is a network of more than 70 organizations in 17 states working together to address concerns about the wellbeing of our native forests, particularly the hardwood forests of the South.

In many southern states, the increased demand for hardwood pulplogs has led to enormous clearcuts and the conversion of vast areas of diverse native forests in to short rotation pulpwood plantations.
